Social Sector:

Tom and Ken make significant financial and time commitments in support of some dynamic social entrepreneurs and their organizations. They also work with more traditional non-profits that are particularly effective in serving the community.

Tom and Ken have found that entrepreneurship and venture capital best practices can translate well to the social sector. Some of the non-profit organizations where they are actively involved are listed below. Tom and Ken support these organizations through some combination of board and committee work, strategic planning and development projects, and executive coaching.


The Boston Foundation
A community foundation established in 1915.

Clarence Foundation
A Northern California-based organization that promotes and supports engaged international philanthropy.  Tom serves on its Advisory Council.

Foundation for Santa Barbara City College
The fundraising arm of Santa Barbara's esteemed local community college. Ken serves on its Board and as Chair of its Finance Committee.

New Profit
A non-profit venture capital fund designed to maximize the impact of philanthropic dollars in effecting large-scale social change.  Tom serves on the Due Diligence Committee.

Santa Barbara Foundation
A community foundation established in 1928. Ken serves on the Board of Trustees, the Development Committee, and as Chair of the Finance Committee. He also helps facilitate its non-profit volunteer leadership development program called the Katherine Harvey Fellows.

Schooner Capital
A Boston-based family office. Tom helps in a variety of ways with the Foundation.

Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara
The largest community-based college scholarship foundation in the United States. Ken serves as its President.

Stanford GSB Center for Entrepreneurial Studies
Ken and Tom support economic and social entrepreneurship case writing, and return each year as a case study in entrepreneurship classes.
